Filling in the Blanks.. New Years.

1.   New Years is  the closing of one chapter and opening of another. This year in particular had a lot of major happenings as you will find in my post tomorrow and I am most definitely ready to close this chapter but am very grateful for what I have gained from it.

2.   One of my New Year's resolutions will be to continue to be open, listen to what people have to say, keep an eye on my goals, reserve my frustrations and improve on a number of things.

3.  A New Year's resolution I've made in the past was to ..I haven't really? I have definitely hoped for better years in light of the years passed but not sure I ever made one solid goal based around the new year.
4. The most time consuming resolution I ever made was none.

5.  This year I will be spending New Year's Eve splurging on yummy treats, drinking cliche bubbly concoctions and most likely on the couch with Tennessee..  couldn't think of a better way.

6.  If I could wish one thing for my new year it would be  to continue life as it is because I am genuinely grateful for my current life standing.. but I would also like to lose a little weight :]

7.  2012 is going to be  filled with lots of goodness..and I have never been able to say that with confidence.

It Went Like This..

Our Christmas weekend recap.

last shot before we undid it all, well, gifts that is, tree still stands decorated.

the messes while making biscuits, cinnamon apples, sticky buns..

making waffles with my new waffle iron.. !

the mess we made while opening gifts :] (puppy girls new bed also)

getting into her new toys from Tennessee's Mom.

All in all, it was a wonderful time spent (even when it was doing the dishes) and was a great first Christmas for Tennessee and I..   although, looking forward to a much slower paced, notnearlyasmanydishes kinda weekend coming up!

Festive Cranberry Crunch Bark (adapted from Pampered Chef)

One package (20-24 oz) vanilla flavored almond bark
1 cup slivered almonds (or regular ones chopped coarsely)
3/4 cup sweetened dried cranberries
2 cups rice crispy cereal

Combine almonds and cranberries, set half of this mixture aside for topping.
Melt bark according to package directions.
Stir cranberries, cereal and almonds into chocolate.
Spread onto a parchment lined baking sheet.
Once spread, sprinkle on remaining nuts and cranberries and gently press into the surface. Allow to cool and harden, break into pieces.
These are pretty self explanatory..  melt chocolate according to package, dip pretzels.. I found using a spatula to get excess off helped. It is important you let the chocolate set for a couple minutes before sprinkling any topping on, especially the heavy toppings as it will pull the chocolate off.

Filling in the Blanks.. Christmas edition.

1.   The best way to spread Christmas cheer is  just smile, offer a hand, crack a joke.. same way you should spread cheer throughout the rest of the year.

2.   The thing I love most about Christmas is putting the ribbons on gifts, holiday food shopping, the smells that fill the air, watching someone open a gift I anticipate them to be excited about, sticky buns christmas morning, sitting in the piles of paper and ribbons, giving hugs after every gift, setting the table for dinner, r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g with the people that matter the most .

3. The holiday season is a time for indulging & love.

4. My favorite thing to eat at the holidays is sticky buns and cheese/salami/crackers.

5. I will be spending Christmas with my honey, TN..and my Grandparents. (TN and mine's first christmas together!)

6.  Tis better to (give or receive?) give, I get really excited all the way up til the moment, I really strive to get things people don't expect or that they wouldn't get for themselves so it's a real treat, I do love getting of course but it doesn't beat watching someone get what they really want, whether I bought it or not.

7. I'm dreaming of a slow, sweet, fun Christmas.

Lately.. according to my phone.

this.. my friends, is baklava cheesecake and it may be one of the best desserts i've ever had, additionally best cheesecake. im not HUGE on cheesecake.. don't get me wrong, i like it, would just choose a few things over it but this was.. something else. the combination of creamy overhaul vs. the crisp texture of baklava was such an amazing taste. i want more, now.

after attending my bosses christmas party, we made our way over to central park to take a walk around in the chilly night air, the lights were pretty standard except for these really interesting ones hanging out of the oak trees, they are suppose to resemble a falling snowflake and they look pretty neat but sort of hard to capture since they are constantly moving.

morning walk on saturday..  it was a perfect morning/day.. this exemplifies it.

melting LOTS of white chocolate for candy..  pics/recipe to come..

Simple As Can Be.

Making peppermint flavored coffee is too easy. Expensive peppermint syrup not necessary.

It's easy as throwing a half of stick of peppermint candy cane or the year round available Brach's peppermint candy in your cup of coffee and stir or (in my case, I did it in the microwave, melted a little quicker). I also decided to make it cold.

If you want to make it festive or just dress it up a little, put a little broken up peppermint or sprinkling sugar around the rim. I just happened to have peppermint sugar :]

Of course, if you want to make it mocha..  stir in a little cocoa with your milk or maybe drizzle a little chocolate in?

Filling in the Blanks.

Fill in the Blanks Friday via the little things we do

1.   My most favorite "little thing" was finding a new, much less crowded, quicker way home after work. (huge, really)
2.  I give anything to play in the snow, or just see it really.
3.  I can't believe how much people complain.
4.  The one thing I'd like to achieve today is be happy the entire day. (it's not as somber as it sounds)
5.  The last thing I want to do today is  work til 5:30.
6.  If I were writing my own blank today, it would say: the last time I told a lie was....
7.  My favorite candle scent is slatkin's winter cabin & cranberry woods.

Birch Box 12/2011.

*These opinions are on my own volition, I am not receiving anything monetarily for my views regarding Birch Box and the items received.

Received my first Birch Box on Friday, Birch Box is a program in which you pay $10/monthly to receive 4-5 high end beauty samples each month. It is definitely a great idea and a nice way to inexpensively come across high end items to try..  I certainly do not buy a lot of high end anything but in the world of beauty (and other areas), some items you do get what you pay for so it's helpful to be able to try them out before dropping anything on them.

My initial reaction to my box? A little underwhelmed. I was actually a little disappointed in the size of the box.. before I sound really ridiculous, all I mean by that is that I knew since it was such a tiny box = tiny items. Don't get me wrong, I think the chances of getting anything full size or even half full size is probably a silly notion but I didn't expect it to be quite so small.

What I received:
  • strapless top/dress "tape"
  • henry prince ageless perfume
  • eboost energy drink
  • loreal mythic oil for your hair
  • porefessional pore minimizer
Birch Box also included a coupon should I place an order, that is another good part about BB ~ they sell all of the items you sample so you don't have to try trekking them down.

My opinion on the products?

  • strapless top/dress "tape" ~ not really interested, i personally don't wear strapless anything, i could see where this would help though, esp. if you are top heavy.
  • henry prince ageless perfume ~ loved getting a perfume sample, this one in particular smells extremely similar to another perfume that i cant readily place..  not my kinda smell at all.
  • eboost energy drink ~ i guess im interested, we'll see if it actually provides any energy.
  • loreal mythic oil for your hair ~ eh, we'll see.. not terribly interested in hair oil but we'll see.
  • porefessional pore minimizer ~ very interested in any QUALITY skin care.

Little Saturday.

TN insisted on taking a picture of dandruff, snow, bubbles in my hair..

This Saturday flew by..   Tennessee ended up having to work so I was on my own for most of the day..  I actually slept in until 10! ..then cleaned up the house a bit, ran down to the office to finish up and mail off a project, ran by my granny's house, tried to do a little Christmas shopping (wasn't in the mood in the slightest..)

Once Tennessee got off of work, we headed to this little Italian place he was raving about, it ended up being phenomenal, everything from service to atmosphere to food was just wonderful and some of the best eggplant I have ever had and I normally turn my nose at it all together.

We then headed to downtown to catch a Christmas parade and missed it by about 20 minutes (Oops!) Oh well, the cannoli was worth it.

We snuck in a little a shopping after then came home to get some laundry done, watch a movie or two and now Tennessee is passed out on the couch and I am wide awake at 1:30am..   that's what I get for sleeping in?

I won't lie, whining is one of my character attributes flaws. Most of my whining I keep internally because let's face it, no one really wants to listen to it..  but on..  some.. occasions, I burst into wtf's, boo hoo, woe is me and ..really? I normally quickly snap back to reality because again, it's a mostly pointless act, especially when you consider the alternative in any given situation.

One thing I have whined a lot about in my own mind is missing GA, it's not just GA.. but that kind of scenery is king in my opinion and it was next to amazing to be able to get in my car and drive down any given country road and discover natural beauty. I severely miss that now, again.. and I feel like I will never live in a place like that again. I know that sounds kind of silly but my job drives me, as it does for many. As explained in earlier posts, it's as solid as solid get's and it's rewarding, you don't walk from something like that. Now that I know remote working for this job is no longer an option, it occurs to me that at some point, someday down the road, I may have to make the call between job & surroundings.

Let me not stray too far though, even though there was definitely magic in the air in living in the mountains, (especially this time of year.. *insert huge, over-exasperated sigh*) I went through a lot of troubled times and the happiness to unhappiness ratio on any given day was something like 15/85..   and that's a remote difference from the current 90/10..  not to mention, my stress level in all categories of my life went down about 80%.

The moral? For myself..  and anyone else who cares to listen. Even though in my mind, now.. I lived in such a beautiful place and nothing could replace those long country roads or walks in the woods..   happiness was NOwhere to be found and as I currently reside somewhere that it's no secret is not my favorite place one earth, happiness is in every corner and for that, whining is not justified this time and I am as grateful as can be.

But.. I hope to see GA someday soon.. and smell the fresh air, even if it's just temporarily.

Lucky Dill Deli.

We love deli's.. I mean's. We are all about reubens, hot pastrami on rye and salami, not to mention the yummy sweets most deli's offer up. One of our local favorite's is Lucky Dill. They just opened another about a mile from our house (very good and very bad idea..)

Anyway, we ventured out on Sunday to grab a bite. This one was the biggest and best looking by far, we were a bit let down by our sandwiches, perhaps because we had eaten phenomenal sandwiches the day before or because maybe we just didn't make the best choices? Either way, we chalked it up to an off day and enjoyed our app & desserts anyhow.
